Concern on Drawing

Sun Jan 7, 2007, 12:09 AM
My drawing style has changed dramatically over time.
Its more. . . 'pretty'. But also more proportional. . . which is good.
I can't say that I'm satisfied with it, but I do like it.
I just wish it looked more. . . shonen-ish. Because I do not want to draw shoujo-mangas.

Which leads me to my original manga.
Recently, thats all I've been drawing.
These ideas pop into my mind and I must draw or write them.
Alot of work has been produced for this manga over the months and I'm wondering if I've spent too much time on it, other than drawing fanart.
I know most audience wants to see fanart. . . and really, thats all I drew before. But I think its time for me to move on from drawing other people's characters and stories and work on my own. . . for my career. After all, my major is media arts & animation and I deeply want to publish my own manga.
Does anyone agree that I should stick working on my original manga. . . Or should I draw more fanart for everyone else?

Really. . . the question is, what do you want to see?
I know most everyone is not at all interested in my work/manga. Which I don't mind. . . I understand. But yeah. What should I work on now?

speaking of work, school is about to begin again. And starbucks is taking my free time. I hope I don't get over-stressed this semester with juggling job, girlfriend, school, friends and family. I can already feel myself neglecting other people, objects and hobbies.

i made this decision a while back... but the thing is, i really hate how the only thing that ever gets attention here on DA is fanart. you can be the most amazing artist on this whole site, but if you're creating original pieces, no one gives a damn. that... really, really irritates me. i STILL get favorites daily on that stupid leegaara pic that i don't even LIKE, but hey, it's fanart and it's two characters everyone knows and to top it off it's shounen ai, so, people favorite it on glance, without even stopping for a single second to think about the actual piece of art that it is.

i guess my advice is, draw what YOU want to draw. don't ever shape yourself and your artwork into whatever you think OTHER people will like. the true artist is not the one that can copy the creativity of others, but the one who can create a world and a style all their own. be loved for what YOU create, for who you are, not what they want you to be.

at least, that's just my opinion. i went through exactly the same questions. and, it led to me pretty much leaving DA. :/

in any case, if you're getting serious about your manga, you probably don't want to post stuff for it up here anyway. it can easily get stolen, and the prepublishing stuff is sorta complicated and annoying. but then again, plenty of other people do, so who knows. it's all up to you.

and that means you. not anyone else. :3

Travel far enough away, my friend, and you will discover something of great beauty: yourself.
O, world's a stage, they say.
